West Bank Lockdown: Hebron Residents Face Displacement After Deadly Strike

Thousands of Palestinians have been forced from their homes in Hebron as Israeli forces impose a strict closure across the territory following the killing of two soldiers.

For the roughly 200,000 residents of Hebron, daily life has come to a sudden and chaotic halt. Since late Friday, families have been waking to loudspeaker announcements ordering them to evacuate their homes, often with little time to gather belongings. The city has been placed under a total seal, meaning that as of Saturday, no one can enter or exit the urban center. This isolation has left many displaced families with few options for shelter, creating a sense of urgent uncertainty for ordinary people who found themselves caught in the crossfire of a broader military response.

The closure follows a violent incident on Friday when two Palestinian gunmen attacked an Israeli army reserve base in Hebron. Both attackers were killed during the engagement, along with two Israeli soldiers. In the wake of these deaths, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a full lockdown of the West Bank. Israeli forces have since conducted hundreds of raids across the region. Yousef al-Ja'bari, the mayor of Hebron, stated that 2,200 people have been forced out of their homes as part of this intensified security operation.

The military activity has not been limited to the city itself. Correspondents reported raids in at least 15 different areas across the West Bank on Saturday. These operations spanned the northern cities of Jenin and Nablus, the central regions including Ramallah, Al-Bireh, Birzeit, and occupied East Jerusalem, as well as Bethlehem in the south. During these sweeps, Israeli forces bulldozed homes and vehicles near the Farsh al-Hawa checkpoint. The Palestinian Prisoners' Society reported that approximately 70 Palestinians were arrested during these widespread incursions.

The Palestinian Authority, which administers the West Bank, has criticized the scale of the response. Officials described the actions as collective punishment, pointing to the demolition of homes and the siege of Palestinian cities. Through the Wafa news agency, the PA urged the international community to apply pressure on Israel to protect the residents of Hebron. Hamas also issued a statement, claiming that the escalation by the occupation and settlers would only fuel further outrage among the population.

On the ground, the situation in Hebron remains tense. Issa Amro, a local activist and political analyst, noted that the entire Hebron governorate, which includes 800,000 people, is now under siege with all entrances and exits closed. He described the atmosphere inside the city as one of fear, stating that there is no safe place for anyone to hide. Journalists documenting the operations also faced friction, with one group targeted by a stun grenade while filming a demolition near a checkpoint.

These events are unfolding just days before Israeli parliamentary elections scheduled for October 27. Nour Odeh, a correspondent covering the region, observed that politicians are attempting to capitalize on the attack for political gain. She noted that Prime Minister Netanyahu and his Likud party are currently trailing in the polls alongside their right-wing coalition allies. Consequently, they are presenting a strong stance on security to appeal to voters. Netanyahu has hinted at future moves regarding the Palestinian Authority, telling reporters that a big surprise awaits the organization, though he did not explicitly confirm plans to dismantle it.

The immediate future for the region remains unclear as the election countdown continues. With the polls closing in three days, both sides are navigating a delicate balance between military objectives and political messaging. The lockdown of Hebron and the broader West Bank has effectively frozen movement and commerce, placing significant strain on the local economy and social fabric. Residents continue to wait for updates on when the restrictions will be lifted and how the political landscape in Israel will shift following the vote.
