Hebron structures demolished after deadly soldier ambush

Israeli forces razed illegal buildings in Hebron following a Friday attack that killed two soldiers, prompting a wide security sweep.

Residents near the northern entrance to Hebron faced immediate changes to their built environment on Saturday. Israeli troops and Civil Administration workers demolished illegally constructed buildings and infrastructure in the area. This action was part of a larger military push to restore order and remove physical hazards following a violent incident the previous day. The removal of these structures is intended to clear lines of sight and reduce cover for potential threats close to the scene of the Friday attack.

The timeline of this escalation began on Friday when two soldiers were killed at Yehuda Junction. The victims were identified as St. Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roytman and Sgt. Yuval Shai Svilem. In response, the military moved quickly to secure the perimeter. The demolitions carried out on Saturday took place near the specific location where the shooting occurred. Officials stated that the goal was to enforce law and order while eliminating the security risks posed by the illegal construction.

The operational scale is significant. The Judea Brigade is leading this counterterrorism campaign. It involves a multi-agency effort with troops from the Duvdevan and Maglan units. Personnel from the Paratroopers Brigade, Givati reconnaissance reservists, and the Border Police are also participating. The Shin Bet security agency provides intelligence guidance for these coordinated movements. This unified approach aims to cover all angles of the suspected threat network.

Search and seizure operations have been extensive. Soldiers conducted inspections of roughly 200 different locations in the vicinity. The primary objective was to rule out the presence of weapons and ongoing terrorist activity. During these sweeps, authorities arrested ten suspects. The thoroughness of these searches is designed to ensure that no hidden caches or operational bases remain undetected in the immediate area.

Military assessments highlight the specific clan affiliation of the local population. Approximately 2,000 residents in the targeted area belong to the Ja'aba clan. This group is noted for its affiliation with Hamas. Central Command officials identified the two gunmen from the Friday attack as Hamouda and Firas al-Ja'aba. Both attackers were Hamas-affiliated and hailed directly from the Ein Dir-Baha neighborhood. This connection has focused the military’s attention on that specific community structure.

Evacuations began on Friday evening in the al-Jalda and Ein Dir-Baha neighborhoods. These are densely populated districts in western Hebron within the city's Palestinian urban area. Civilians who wished to leave were allowed to exit through designated checkpoints. These checkpoints are operated jointly by the Shin Bet and the IDF. The temporary withdrawal of residents facilitates deeper inspections of structures and family homes.

Officials explained that clearing the area of civilians allows for safer and more thorough searches. Troops and Shin Bet personnel are looking for terrorist infrastructure, weapons, ammunition, explosives laboratories, and weapons caches. The security establishment has long viewed this specific zone as a hub for Hamas operatives in Hebron. The current operation seeks to dismantle this established presence through detailed physical inspections.

A situational assessment will be held on Saturday to decide if the operation should expand further. In parallel, Brig. Gen. Kobi Heller, commander of the IDF's West Bank Division, has broadened arrest and search efforts. These additional operations are taking place in the Nablus, Jenin, and Tulkarm areas, as well as other locations throughout Samaria. The expanded scope reflects broader concerns about Hamas leadership abroad attempting to coordinate attacks ahead of upcoming elections.
