Aston Villa Stuns Manchester City With a Late Comeback Victory

Nicolas Jackson scored twice to help Unai Emery's side defeat the league leaders and end their perfect season start.

Nicolas Jackson silenced the doubts surrounding Manchester City's recent form by scoring both goals in a 2-1 victory for Aston Villa at Villa Park. The result ended the visitors' perfect start to the Premier League campaign, which had seen them win their first seven matches under manager Enzo Maresca. For City, it was a familiar frustration, as they have now lost at this venue in each of the last four seasons.

The visitors fell behind early in the match. After just six minutes, a heavy touch from Marc Guehi allowed Jackson to break free. He cut inside Elliott Anderson and fired a high shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma to give the home side the lead. Although City dominated possession for much of the first half, their attacking efforts were repeatedly thwarted by Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.

Suzuki made several key saves to keep the score level. He denied Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov, while also forcing Ndiaye's shot onto the post. The pressure finally broke through in the 52nd minute when Erling Haaland headed home from a Ndiaye cross. This goal marked Haaland's 13th strike in his last ten appearances this season, though Josko Gvardiol missed a chance to put City ahead shortly after when his drive hit the crossbar.

Aston Villa responded quickly to the equalizer. In the 60th minute, Ibrahim Mbaye found space behind the City defense and delivered a cross that Jackson finished with a low shot. Donnarumma should have been able to save it, but the ball slipped past him. City pushed hard for a winner in the final minutes but could not find a way back into the game.

The outcome has significant implications for the league table. Arsenal has the chance to draw level with City on points if they defeat Everton at home later on Saturday. For Villa, the win marks their sixth victory in seven games across all competitions, moving them up to sixth place in the standings.

This performance highlights the sustained success of Unai Emery, who has transformed the club into a Champions League contender over the last four years. He has maintained this trajectory despite losing six players who started last season's Europa League final to the transfer window. The summer acquisitions of Jackson, Suzuki, Mbaye, and Johan Manzambi have already proven effective, even after a slow start to the new campaign.

The defeat occurred while City is still grappling with legal challenges. The club is appealing a guilty verdict on over 100 charges related to financial rules broken between 2009 and 2018, with potential sanctions including relegation. While the team had been performing well despite this uncertainty, two defensive mistakes proved costly against Villa.
